TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My teaching leads the student in an exploration of the physical technique of music, the cognitive awareness of music, and the emotional connection to music. These three elements come together to free your unique voice.
I use a healthy and efficient approach to technique that honors every stage of development, and considers each individual's one-of-a-kind physical structure. My goal is to empower you to express yourself as the artist you are via functional physical freedom.
An artist can be effective at every stage of development, and through my teaching, I help you define your own artistry. Technical progress will free you and enable you to fully celebrate your gifts. With my guidance, you will become more aware of your habits, you will begin to hear music differently, you will increase your self-confidence, and you will further discover your inspiration and artistic talents.
Any development that makes you a better musician also makes you a better person. Your endeavors in music will enhance your life overall.

LOCATION
Katina Mitchell Music Studio is located in San Diego, California. You will receive the exact location when you schedule a lesson.
SCHEDULING
Private students: After the first lesson, all private students must book lessons via Calendly (I will send you the link). Please find a time that works for you, and be sure that you receive a confirmation from Calendly. The hours available on Calendly are the only hours I can offer. If you cannot schedule a lesson at the time you want, it means another student has already booked that lesson, or I have a conflict. The time you book is the start time of your lesson, and I honor the first booking I receive to ensure fairness. Please do not email or text me about the details of your complex personal schedule. You may book lessons up to 70 days in advance.
College students enrolled at Palomar and Grossmont: Please book your lessons with me directly over email at the beginning of the semester. The hours you schedule for your lessons are the only hours you can expect me to be on campus. If you cannot schedule a lesson at the time you want, it is because another student has already booked that time, or I have a conflict. The time you book is the start time of your lesson. Please be on time and expect your grade to be lowered if you are late.
ARRIVAL
When you arrive, please knock. If no one answers, let yourself in quietly and sit down to listen if another lesson is in progress.
LESSON OBSERVATION
Family members or friends are welcome to
quietly observe lessons.
FEES
Private lessons:
$100/hour
$50/half hour
Need-based and merit-based scholarships are available for a select number of students. If circumstantial or financial hardships are preventing you from taking voice lessons, please speak with me. It is my goal to make musical training available and affordable to all sincerely interested students, regardless of skill.
PAYMENT
I use VenMo, which is free for you and for me. Cash and checks are also accepted.
Credit cards are not accepted. Please do not post-date checks. Returned checks must be reimbursed with an added fee. If more than two checks are returned then only cash will be accepted. Please discuss unusual circumstances and special needs with me.
ILLNESS
If you need to cancel due to illness please let me know as soon as you can. Please do not come to your lesson if you are sick. If you have had a mild cold longer than 5 days you may come to your lesson. If you have a new cold, a persistent cough, a sore throat, a fever, or other symptoms, please contact me to cancel and then stay home and rest. Please rest your voice when you are sick.
PUNCTUALITY AND CANCELLATION
It is your responsibility to reschedule any missed lessons, and if I need to reschedule any lessons, I will contact you at least 24 hours in advance. Payment is due at the lesson.
Choose a lesson time you know you can make. We both set aside time for lessons so that you will grow consistently. If you must miss a lesson you have already scheduled, notify me as soon as possible.
If you miss a lesson without a minimum of 24 hours notice, you are expected to pay for that lesson before receiving any other lessons.
Please arrive on time. If you are late, expect your lesson to end on time. If I am running late, you will still receive your full lesson time. Please allow for slight time flexibility.
PRACTICING
I expect you to practice at home so that you will grow as much as possible during our mentorship. Music requires quality repetition: efficient, calm, clear, correct practice is more important than practicing for long periods of time. Students are strongly encouraged to practice daily.
MATERIALS
Students are expected to purchase their own sheet music and workbooks.
ALLERGIES
I have one dog and one cat. Neither will be in the teaching space while you are having your lesson.
COVID-19
I am fully vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine.
